Air Travel Is Already Back to Normal in Some Places. Here’s Where.

In Florida, Key West International Airport is the busiest airport, while Miami International has half the number of passengers as it was before the epidemic.

But airports operating in major cities still serve fewer travelers than they did earlier last year. Washington National, near the District of Columbia, is less than 70 percent of riders. San Francisco International uses a quarter of its volume, and Kennedy Airport in New York is about one-third.

This may indicate a slight return on business. Airports at these destinations also have a number of flights, which are expected to take a long time to resume. “The only difference is the masks,” said Richard Strickland, an airport manager at Key West International, who has traveled five times in the past five months. “Now we are more busy than we were in 2019.”

Idaho Falls Airport is about two hours from Yellowstone National Park, which attracted many visitors last year. The passenger pass rate is now 80% of what it was last year – a much stronger recovery than the state-owned airport, in Boise, which is about 60 percent of its normal travel.

Two other airports operating in Yellowstone, one in Wyoming and the other in Montana, returned to modern transportation in early March.

“By the end of summer and the autumn, we are looking at the numbers we would have in 2019,” said Rick Cloutier, director of Idaho Falls airport. “We had the opportunity to embrace the people’s desire to go abroad.”

Passenger flights return to the airport at Canyonlands Field in Utah, near Arches National Park. On the Gulf Coast of Florida, airports near the coast have a similar good year. There were 24% more riders passing the Northwest Florida Beaches airport in early March than at that time last year.

Airports at one resort are still empty, though: Hawaiian airports have dropped between 51 percent and 84 percent of passengers. The government, which has had fewer Covid cases, requires visitors to be tested negative within three days of departure or less than 10 days of arrival, making travel more difficult. Prolonged exposure to airplanes can also be a threat to passengers.

The urge to travel by airplane can leave a city behind. Americans have reacted differently to ways to reduce the spread of the epidemic, wearing masks and reducing home time in various ways.

Steve Gleason, chief of the Provo Municipal airport, said: “We seem to be stuffing things up when other people don’t show up. His plane is small – usually about four or more flights a day – but busy. It is not very close to any park.

Lower traffic is 2% lower than last year, while Salt Lake City International, an hour, is still 40% lower.
